❓ Frequently Asked Questions

National Average: ~19.5 (50th percentile)
Good Score: 24+ (75th percentile)
Excellent Score: 30+ (93rd percentile)
Top Schools: 33+ for Ivy League and highly selective universities

What's "good" depends on your target colleges. Check the middle 50% ACT range for admitted students at your schools. A score in or above that range makes you competitive.

Recommended: 8-12 weeks of consistent study
Weekly Commitment: 5-10 hours (more if starting far from target)
Total Hours: 40-100 hours typically needed for 3-5 point improvement

Students starting with lower scores or aiming for 5+ point improvements may need 3-6 months. Quality matters more than quantity—focused, strategic practice beats passive studying.

Neither is universally easier—they test different skills:

ACT Advantages: Faster pace but more straightforward questions, dedicated Science section (data interpretation, not science knowledge), calculator allowed on all Math, more time per question in Math

SAT Advantages: More time overall, no Science section, focuses more on evidence-based reading, Math has reference sheet

Take practice tests for both to see which suits you better. Most students score similarly on both when converted.

Recommended: 2-3 times maximum
First: Spring of junior year (February-April)
Second: Fall of senior year (September-October)
Third (if needed): November/December senior year

Most students improve 2-4 points on second attempt. Diminishing returns after 3 attempts. Focus on quality preparation between tests, not just retaking repeatedly.

Check College Requirements:
• Some colleges require it (especially selective schools)
• Many colleges don't require it anymore
• Some recommend it but don't require

Take It If: You're applying to selective colleges, you're a strong writer, or you're unsure of your college list

Skip It If: None of your target colleges require it, you struggle with timed writing

Adding Writing costs ~$20 extra. You can't add it later—must register for it initially.
